Ranil Urges SF's Release

(IslandThe UNP said yesterday that contrary to accusations, it had not abandoned retired Gen. Sarath Fonseka and was writing to President Mahinda Rajapaksa to release Fonseka immediately.

UNP Media spokesman Gayantha Karunathillake told a news conference in Colombo that Wickremesinghe in his capacity, as Opposition leader, was to dispatch a letter to Rajapaksa yesterday or latest by today.

Monks Protest SF's Incarceration

(CPVen. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero, a leading Sinhala nationalist Buddhist monk activist, said today that he was ready to have rigorous imprisonment for life with hundred more monks if the government does not release the ex-Army Commander General (Retd.) Sarath Fonseka.

Sobhitha Thero is one of the highly respected Buddhist leaders of Sri Lanka and a very eloquent orator. He has not appeared with any major Bhikku movements of the country in the recent past.

Saudi Bans Recruitment from Sri Lanka

(IslandSaudi Arabia’s National Recruitment Committee has called upon all private recruitment offices in the Kingdom not to sign any further contracts for the employment of Sri Lankan nationals from abroad, Saudi based press reports said yesterday.

A news item appeared on the Saudi Gazette newspaper said: "The "extremely urgent" call followed disputes between the Sri Lankan Labor Union (ALFIA) and the Sri Lankan Labor Office, which could lead to delays in the arrival of workers to the Kingdom, the newspaper said. It is also a response to the Sri Lankan media’s negative portrayal of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the National Recruitment Committee and ALFIA which was due to come into effect on Sep.10.

Lawyers and Politicians Protest

(CPA group of Sri Lankan lawyers held a protest this afternoon at the main Colombo High Court premises in Hulftsdorp calling for the release of former Army Commander and Democratic National Alliance (DNA) Leader retired General Sarath Fonseka.

Fonseka's supporters holding placards protested the President Mahinda Rajapaksa's decision to uphold the prison sentence delivered by the court martial against the former war hero.

More Gloom than Glory in New York Visit

(STSri Lanka did not cover itself with political glory during the UN summit last week. President Mahinda Rajapaksa's reception at the Empire Room of the Waldorf Astoria did not attract any prominent world leaders - with the exception of Cyprus, Fiji and the Maldives raising serious doubts over the efficacy of the Ministry of External Affairs.

Contrary to earlier reports, it was Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki who had attended and not President Mahmoud Ahamedinejad.
