Finally Italian food lovers have an eating place that comes close to being authentic. Stepping into the restaurant is a bit like stepping into Italy!! 

Regina Margherita is owned and operated by an Italian lady and her Sri Lankan husband. The Restaurant has an Italian Chef in charge of the kitchen. The food is outstanding and the service, led by the very friendly owners, is even better. 

The 70 odd seat Restaurant is air-conditioned, very spacious and comfortable and has the feel of a typically busy and noisy Italian Restaurant. It seems to get filled up each night and is frequented by locals and expatriates. Making a reservation before getting there is recommended.  

The menu features a superb collection of pizzas and pasta dishes. Something special about Regina Margherita is that, if at all possible, they would accommodate diners’ requests for dishes not featured on the menu. They serve the usual Italian starters such as La Caprese, Prosciutto and Melon and Antipasto. A few other main dishes based on steak, prawn, chicken and veal is also on offer. Missing are fish and calamari based dishes.  

Whilst the usual selection of coffees are available the desserts, which includes the perennial favourite, Tiramisu, are nothing much to write home about. There is a fairly good collection of wines on offer as well as beer (not much choice). No hard liquor is served. A bottle of wine is priced at $25 and above. The house wine is quite good.

I had the embarrassing experience of choosing this restaurant for my birthday dinner. I would not recommend it neither will myself or my other guests be making a return visit. The prices are expensive - 300 rupees plus tax for a bottle of water that has 50 rupees on the bottle - no choice but to buy the water because the restaurant unlike most other establishments in Colombo chooses not to serve filtered water. The food took ages to come and there was not much in the way of bread to keep one going before the meal. For the prices that are charged the service and the portions don't stand up. This establishment won't be getting much custom from ex-pat people who live and work in Sri Lanka.


our wine arrived well after our appetizers, though I had ordered it to complement them. As a result, we were left with only water to accompany our appetizers and more wine than we needed to accompany our entrées. The courses were also brought out almost on top of each other. Additionally, our coffee, which we specifically ordered for after the dessert course in order to make the heretofore rushed meal more leisurely, arrived with the desserts. The server either wasn’t listening or wasn’t on our side.

I was at least as surprised to find several problems with the food itself, harder to understand even on a busy night. The PASTA SALMONE rubbery and stuck to the plate. I presume it had been prepared well in advance. Similarly, the sauce on my spouse’s ravioli had congealed. Finally, my lamb was so salty as to be difficult to eat. Why not make an issue during the meal? Simple. I wanted to preserve what I could of the evening.

We certainly didn’t expect one at a this restaurant featuring Provençal dishes. I am sure this experience was a rare aberration from your usual high levels of service and food quality there was before it used to be a family run place. Unfortunately, it occurred during what should have been a very special evening.

    We love our food, we love to cook and we eat out a lot. We have travelled a great deal (at last count more than 50 countries) and we always indulge in eating out very frequently when we are on the road.  

    This page is our (my wife and myself) effort to give you the benefit of our opinion of as many Eating Out locations in Sri Lanka as possible. We have eaten at least 2 times in each of the restaraunts reviewed.
    We have rated all locations on Quality of Food, Service and Ambience. Each location has also been given an Overall Rating. A scale of 1 to 5 has been used, 1 being poor and 5 being excellent.  
    Pricing estimates are based on each person having 2 courses (out of starter, main meal and dessert) as well as a soft drink. Liquor and coffee prices are excluded. Pricing is categorised as follows:
    Inexpensive: Up to $12 p.p.Moderate: $12 to $25 p.p.Expensive: $25 to $35 p.p.
    Very Expensive:  Above $35 p.p.

    The above does not include taxes (12% at present) and service charges (usually 10%).
