Located at the plush 5 star Cinnamon Grand Hotel, the Lagoon Restaurant is easily one of the best and most popular restaurants in the country. It serves the freshest of seafood cooked to your exact specifications.
The restaurant has a unique concept where all the seafood is laid out market-style for you to choose from. You are charged according to the weight you consume no matter what you consume. What is available depends on the day’s catch. Usually there is a wide selection to choose from including lobster, sea and lagoon crab, prawns that come in all sizes, crayfish, calamari and a number of different varieties of fish ranging from snapper, seer, modha, tuna, mullet and sprats. The main meals are cooked in 5 different styles; Sri Lankan, Indian, Chinese, Thai and Continental. The various accompanying sauces such as chilli garlic, hot butter, spicy ginger, oyster, tamarind Thai curry and Sri Lankan curry are simply out of this world!!

The restaurant features separate menus for hot and cold starters, desserts and various coffees which are really great. Deep fried crab claws, crispy spiced sprats, prawn cocktails and sushi platters are some of our favourite starters. The selection of wines is extensive and you can have any cocktail or other drink you desire.

Last but not least the service you get from the well trained and attentive waiters makes one feel pampered the whole time you spend at this wonderful restaurant.

The restaurant is extremely well patronised almost all the time and a prior reservation is recommended.

Hello -

Yes, the seafood, service and atmosphere is amazing. However, the fact that this high-class restaurant is serving shark on their menu is (to put it mildly) out-dated and outrageous.

To support the mass killing of shark (at ~ 100 million sharks per year) for 'fin soup' shows that this restaurant needs to be more aware of the transition from traditional fishing practices for the sake of money, to environmental conservation. 30% of shark species (around 100) are nearly extinct because of this. The Lagoon had a juvenile blue shark on ice - the most endangered species.

Not trendy, not cool. Will be sending a letter of appeal to the manager, and hoping that this restaurant is not driven by how much money it can make, but making their guests comfortable.

serving "shark meat" and "shark fin soup" are 2 different things. Sri Lanka's fishing industry is still very much traditional. Please give your advice rather to the other part of the world where every day millions of animals being raised/treated/force-fed/slautered in most inhuman ways. Examples: Foie-gras business in france, all animal farms in Europe/ US/Canada etc, baby seal massacres in Canada and Norway etc. please take action now: look at these videos.

    We love our food, we love to cook and we eat out a lot. We have travelled a great deal (at last count more than 50 countries) and we always indulge in eating out very frequently when we are on the road.  

    This page is our (my wife and myself) effort to give you the benefit of our opinion of as many Eating Out locations in Sri Lanka as possible. We have eaten at least 2 times in each of the restaraunts reviewed.
    We have rated all locations on Quality of Food, Service and Ambience. Each location has also been given an Overall Rating. A scale of 1 to 5 has been used, 1 being poor and 5 being excellent.  
    Pricing estimates are based on each person having 2 courses (out of starter, main meal and dessert) as well as a soft drink. Liquor and coffee prices are excluded. Pricing is categorised as follows:
    Inexpensive: Up to $12 p.p.Moderate: $12 to $25 p.p.Expensive: $25 to $35 p.p.
    Very Expensive:  Above $35 p.p.

    The above does not include taxes (12% at present) and service charges (usually 10%).
