The Urban Kitchen brings a unique concept of dining to Sri Lanka. It is part restaurant and part food court. The owners refer to the concept as the ”food factory concept”. The facility is large and can seat 250, 180 of the seats indoors in air-conditioned comfort. The indoor area is very bright, very comfortable and tastefully decorated.

The Urban Kitchen is inexpensive. Considering what one gets, the value preposition is superb. The staff are very friendly, well trained and makes you feel at home as soon as you walk in. The waiting time after ordering the food is a bit too much. This is something the management is addressing at present.

All meats at the Urban Kitchen are Halal-based. They do not serve pork or liquor. The focus is very much on healthy food.  At lunch time in addition to the a-la-carte menu, diners have a choice of having either a Sri Lankan or Chinese meal, both laid out buffet-style. The menu is extensive and very inexpensive. It is divided into Asian, pasta, grilled items, sandwiches, salads, kids menu and desserts. The Asian section features Sri Lankan, Chinese, Thai and Malaysian cuisine. The choices are many, and there is bound to be something in the menu to satisfy everyone’s taste. Seafood Laksa, vegetarian Laksa, hot lamb baguette, steak sandwich, flame-grilled chicken salad, pan-seared modha  (white fish) and chicken Char Kway Teow are examples of some of the attractive dishes available.

The Urban Kitchen is located in the property of a mega-store and the whole locality is quite busy during the day. However at night time things quieten down considerably. Whatever time you get in, once you are in, the atmosphere is quite pleasant, peaceful and comfortable. There is plenty of parking available in the premises.

We highly recommend the Urban Kitchen as a great place where you get real value for the money you spend. It is ideal for a family outing.

The Prima Taste Restaurant is a franchised operation with headquarters in Singapore. They operate restaurants in 10 countries at present, most of which are located in Asia. They serve Singaporean cuisine exclusively. The Sri Lankan operation is conveniently located with ample parking on the main road leading to the Parliament complex about 10 minutes from the City of Colombo.

The restaurant is very spacious and can accommodate about 115 people. The service is good and the food is superb. Two of their chefs have been trained in Singapore. All the sauces used are supplied by their principles in Singapore. Laksa with Chicken or Prawns, Singapore Chilli Crab, Black Pepper Crab and Seafood Char Kway Teow are among the favourites of patrons. The menu is very extensive and features all meats, vegetarian selections, a variety of noodles and rice-based dishes, wok fried preparations and separate soup and appetizer menus.

Prima Taste serves wine and beer and allows patrons to bring in their own hard liquor at no extra cost. The selection of wines is not that great with a bottle costing around USD 20 and above.

This restaurant is definitely worth a visit especially for those who are looking for a slightly different tasting experience from the numerous Chinese restaurants in Colombo.

The Xilaton is conveniently located in an upscale neighbourhood with ample parking. The restaurant employs 3 Chinese chefs and is a favourite of the residents of Chinese origin in Sri Lanka. The Xilaton has oodles of space and can accommodate 280 people. It has 5 separate rooms upstairs for private dining. Whilst they have a well-stocked bar, patrons can bring in their own hard liquor at no extra cost. They also have a good collection of wines costing about USD 15 and above.

All of their main dishes come either large or small. Their portions are very big and 2 small main dishes accompanied by some plain rice will be ample for two people. Some of the local favourites are hot butter cuttle fish, hot garlic prawns, crispy roast chicken and fried roast pork, whilst the Chinese patrons go for pork knuckles, Sri Lankan crab and Groupa fish.

Xilaton is one of the few restaurants that serve Peking duck, a large portion of which will put you back about USD 55!! The menu features a very wide selection of hot and cold starters, clear and thick soups, virtually all kinds of meat dishes, vegetarian dishes, and various different rice and noodle preparations.

With enough notice, usually one week, they will do exotic preparations such as barbeque piglet, braised dried abalone and Emperor’s wok style chicken. They have recently started out door catering with special menus for a minimum of 35 pax.

The food is generally delicious and the service very friendly, attentive and quick. The interior decor is rather plain and the lighting too bright for our liking. Xilaton is the place to go for anyone looking for authentic Chinese cooking in Wonderful Sri Lanka.

The Sizzle gives diners a unique experience. Almost all items on their menu are served on sizzling hot plates, even the desserts!! The Sizzle is conveniently located in a quiet street in Central Colombo housed in an old converted house. It has many nooks and crannies and some rooms which affords diners all the privacy they need.

The restaurant serves Halal food and does not serve pork-based dishes or liquor. Their drinks menu features a good selection of mocktails and some milkshakes.

All the main meals come on sizzling platters and feature a wide choice including steak, mutton, lamb, chicken, seafood, fish and vegetarian. These platters are served with your choice of starch (french-fries, mashed potato, baked potato, potato wedges), carbs (rice, noodles, pasta) and sauces (pepper, garlic, tomato, hot chilli, asparagus, sweet and sour, ginger, oyster).

There is a separate menu for kids, several lunch time specials and even sizzling biriyanis. The main meal comes in a choice of small and regular. The regular portion is quite filling. If you are planning on having a starter and dessert, we recommend you selecting the small main meal. Most of the starters are also sizzler platters. In addition there are a few soups and seafood and other cocktails. The sizzling desserts are a real treat – there are cheesecakes, lemon meringue, brownies and a date crème brulee, just to name a few, all served with ice cream.

The Sizzle can seat 85 persons. The interior, whilst very comfortable and roomy has very drab decor. The service is quite good. All in all, a great place to go out with friends and family.

    Eating Out

We love our food, we love to cook and we eat out a lot. We have travelled a great deal (at last count more than 50 countries) and we always indulge in eating out very frequently when we are on the road.

This page is our (my wife and myself) effort to give you the benefit of our opinion of as many Eating Out locations in Sri Lanka as possible. We have eaten at least 2 times in each of the restaraunts reviewed.
We have rated all locations on Quality of Food, Service and Ambience. Each location has also been given an Overall Rating. A scale of 1 to 5 has been used, 1 being poor and 5 being excellent.
Pricing estimates are based on each person having 2 courses (out of starter, main meal and dessert) as well as a soft drink. Liquor and coffee prices are excluded. Pricing is categorised as follows:
    Inexpensive: Up to $12 p.p.Moderate: $12 to $25 p.p.Expensive: $25 to $35 p.p.
    Very Expensive:  Above $35 p.p.

The above does not include taxes (12% at present) and service charges (usually 10%).
